Ava's Apush blog: LAD #7: Washington's Farewell Address
George Washington's farewell Speech
Summary:
Washington starts off stating that the time has come for the people to elect a new president. In his farewell speech, Washington addressed his concerns with the American people. Washington cautioned the people to appreciate and value national union above their individual happiness. Washington also stated the effect of individual interests on the overall relationship with foreign countries. He stressed his Proclamation of Neutrality by saying that America should continue its policies of non-alignment, regardless of beneficial affairs. Washington made sure to warn Americans not to divide into political groups because it would only decrease the unity of America. He wanted everyone to continue to follow the acts of the Constitution.
Washington stepped down from office after his second term, much like Cincinnatus did in ancient Roman times.
