Summary:
Washington starts off stating that the time has come for the people to elect a new president. In his farewell speech, Washington addressed his concerns with the American people. Washington cautioned the people to appreciate and value national union above their individual happiness. Washington also stated the effect of individual interests on the overall relationship with foreign countries. He stressed his Proclamation of Neutrality by saying that America should continue its policies of non-alignment, regardless of beneficial affairs. Washington made sure  to warn Americans not to divide into political groups because it would only decrease the unity of America.  He wanted everyone to continue to follow the acts of the Constitution.

Ava'a Apush Blog : LAD #6: Washington's Proclamation of Neutrality

George Washington, who gave the Proclamation of Neutrality

Summarize- The Proclamation of Neutrality 1793:

In Washington's Proclamation of Neutrality, he proclaimed that the United States should engage in an honest and friendly conduct of neutrality towards various world powers such as Austria, Prussia, Sardinia, Great Britain, the United Netherlands, and France. Taking into consideration a state of war  between various of the mentioned countries, it was important for the United States to remain impartial to all of them. If the United States was to disobey this, then the punishment would be followed upon that person who disobeyed the law. Washington's clear point is that he wishes to have no connection to the problems in Europe and that he will neither help nor hinder any European affairs by maintaining a strict policy of neutrality.

The majority of Americans felt that the United States should stay out of World War I because it was not a signatory to any of the agreements that had lured the European powers into conflict across the continent, so President Woodrow Wilson declared a neutrality policy which relates to Washington's policy.

Ava's APUSH:Republican Motherhoood Blog

Republican Motherhood

1. What role did the Revolutionary War play in the transformation of housewifery to Republican Motherhood?
They acted as inspiration and ethusiasm for ideals like independence, republicanism, and patriotism that were brought out by the Revolutionary War. After the Revolution it was common belief that this ideals needed to be carried through generations and it was the mothers duty to put these ideals into their son's minds(Document A).

2. What were the consequences of Republican Motherhood on women?
Women had to educate the sons and raise them to be republicans. In document D, it states that the destiny of our country is dependent on the mothers.

3. What is the significance of the ideology of Republican Motherhood as a stage in the process of women's socialization?
Through Republican motherhood women were given much more respect. The home, which was considered to be their place of duty, was considered the "cradle of the human race" where the nature of people is decided.(Doc A). It also encouraged women to be educated in the ways of liberty and republicanism in order to teach their sons these values (Doc B).

1.       Describe the setting.
The setting is a women with her two children. They are sitting on what looks to be a pink couch and one child is on her lap and the other next to her. They all seem to be wearing dresses.

2.     Who serves at the center of the portrait and why?  How does the woman look?  How is she “republican” rather than aristocratic?
The center of the portrait is the mother, I think this because my eyes go straight to her in the photo. She looks happy and proud. She represents a republican because it is apparent that she cares for her children.

3    What values do her sons exhibit?
One of the children is holding a bird, which represents freedom and compassion. The other is reaching for his mother which shows dependency.

4.   Is there a significance to the position of Mrs. Tilgham’s arm?
Mrs. Tilgham's arm is draped over her younger child in front of her. I think that it signifies that she educating the youngest right then because she has already done so for the older one.

This propaganda relates to Republican Motherhood because it promotes nationality and pride just like the republican mothers were educated to do.

Lad #5: Federalist #10 Ava's APUSH blog

  Federalists New Constitution
1.  Why are factions so difficult to eliminate?
They are difficult to eliminate because all of the colonists had varying opinions, about everything from religion to government, that inevitably clashed. Because there are so many differences you can not simply choose which one to follow, so they are extremely had to get rid of.

2. If factions cannot be removed then how can they be controlled?

Factions can be controlled by having a majority against it, especially in a democracy. But if any faction group is a vast majority, then a democracy is no longer working. However with a representative republic, this is not as big a problem as the problems can be solved even with differing factions, as the representatives are few and can converse easily. Also, without the uneducated masses forced to participate in government, the government, even with differing factions, can be efficient and get things done.

Blog #4- Revolution Article

1.No paintings of the Revolution detailed the horrible atrocities committed, while Civil War pictures accurately depicted bodies on the battlefield and soldiers viciously attacking each other.

2.The Revolution was America's longest declared war, lasting more than eight years. The estimated number of people killed was three million. One in sixteen males in the military died in the Revolution.

3.Forty-seven percent of the Continental army soldiers taken as prisoners in the Revolution perished while only twelve-fifteen percent of prisoners in the Civil War died.

Civil War Photo

4.The civil war weapons were much more deadly than the ones from the revolution; the civil war guns could shoot up to 6 times more than the revolutionary ones.

5.Soldiers being desperate for clothing during the Revolutionary War, the victorious party of a battle would often steal the clothes off of the backs of those that had been defeated. This was not practiced during the Civil war.

USA flag. This relates to the civil and revolutionary war because without the battles, and knowledge we gained our country wouldn't be the same.

Ava's AP American Blog Lad #3: Declaration of Independence

1. Summarize the Declaration of Independence in 3 parts (1. democratic principles, 2. list a handful of grievances, 3. the conclusion).

The signing of The Declaration of Independence 1776.

1. Democratic Principles:
The Declaration of Independence completely remodeled the view points of the country. After living under the rule of King George III, the colonists formed a democratic government that would be run by and for the people of America. The declaration gave every man's right to 'life liberty, and the pursuit of happiness' and stated 'all men are created equal'. Another democratic principle established in the declaration is that the government is responsible for protecting their people and these unalienable rights and if they do not succeed, the people have the right to alter or throw off the government and find new people to protect their future.

2. List a handful of grievances:
Other than the fact that the colonists reformed their government to a democratic perspective, they also wrote a list of grievances against Britain. They listed things such as: over taxing without representation, forcing the colonists to host solders in their homes, cutting off American trade from anyone but Britain, and having no input of a jury in American trials. Lastly, the grievances listed included the lack of basic rights for the colonists.

3. The Conclusion:
The conclusion within the Declaration of Independence brought the people of America closer due to the nationalistic way it was written. The conclusion verified there independency from all British rule and illuminated there certain decision to break away from British rule and form a new government. It concluded that they have the right to gain allies, trade with other countries, make peace, declare war, and start taxation with representation. The Declaration of Independence signified the colonists’ independence from Great Britain and set the foundation for the United States of America.

The Bill of Rights ratified in 1791 gave more freedoms and democratic rights to the people. It relates to the declaration because it the declaration also granted democratic freedoms and rights.

Peter Zenger Trial.

Q: What was the controversy over his charges?

A: The controversy over his charges were that everything Peter published were true. Hamilton defended this and proved that what he printed was not untrue and therefore the charges of being libel are not accurate.

Q: What influence did his case have on American governmental traditions?

A: His case (proven non guilty) influenced the first amendment and protected the rights and freedom of people (including the press). This caused Americans to not agree with England's law of sedition.

Q: What is the lasting significance of his trial?

A: The lasting significance of Peter's trial is the outcome of it. The freedoms and rights gained from the trial helped create a more fair judicial branch that helps create stronger and unified government.

This photo of the 13th amendment of the abolishment of slavery relates to the zinger trials because it both opens the doors the new rights and fairness/equality for the people.

Ava's AP US BLOG: Mayflower compact

Q: What concepts are included in the Mayflower Compact?

A: The mayflower compact holds many influential concepts for the American colonies. In the compact they agreed to give will to the majority and they formed a democracy. They also pledged their loyalty to the King of England, god, and the foundation of their new colony. Lastly, they 41 men signed to have new "just and equal" laws set for their colony which highlights the start or origin of democracy starting to form from this compact.

The signing of Mayflower Compact

Q: How does the Mayflower Compact reflect and attachment to both the "Old" and "New" worlds?

A: The Mayflower Compact reflects to the "old" and "new" world in many ways. It connects to the "old world" by the people clearly stating and devoting their loyalty to their mother country England and the king.  Another example of how is reflects the old world is that in the document they state they want to "bring glory back to England" therefore illuminating their ongoing devotion to them. In the document it also reflected to the "New" world. It did this by creating more of a democracy with new agreements. The government was made fair and agreements were set to help out the settlers which highlights aspects of the new world.

Q: How did the fundamental orders of Connecticut differ from the Mayflower Compact?

A: The fundamental orders of Connecticut differed from the Mayflower compact because the compact was only a plan agreed to be loyal to mother country and the King while the fundamental orders was a very long structured setup government that made no connections to being loyal to the king or the mother country. The main difference is that the fundamental orders government made rules and laws where the Mayflower Compact made agreements based upon the England's preference.

Q: What prompted the colonists of Connecticut to take this approach to government, i.e.: use of a written constitution?

A: The poor government prior to this prompted the colonists to make a change in the government. As well as, Thomas Hooker encouraged the colonists to create a written government with new changes.  The colonists agreed and were driven to become unified and equal under the laws they set. They devoted their government towards god and thrived to become stronger and more peaceful.

Q: In what significant way(s) does the Fundamental Orders reflect a fear of and safeguard against the usurping of power by one person or a chosen few?

A: The very democratic and unified government set up reflected a fear of the rising power. Any freeman could vote upon the yearly leader called magistrates. There system was very effective to make sure no one could gain too much control and takeover the colony which created a safeguard. They had check and balances and gave power to the people through the voting which lead to many more great ideas.
This is the signing of the declaration of Independence which relates to the Mayflower Compact because they both declare a new government with new rules and new agreements.
